Nerja and Cave

Nerja, an oustandingly beautiful town and world tourist mecca, deserves a special mention for its impressive caves, that are more than 250,000 years old, and now a national monument and one which will astound with its spectacular and unique beauty. It is currently the third most visited monument in the whole of Spain. Its capricious rocky formations can be likened to Modernist Cathedrals.

Nerja means 'abundant fountain' in the Arabic language. Its charming, traditional architecture, with its white walls dotted with flowers, oozes Andalusian flavour and offers spectacular views from the Balcon de Europa, situated on a cliff in the town centre, where once there stood a castle.Nerja also boasts a lively nightlife with plenty of typical restaurants, discos, music, cafes, flamenco clubs and a wealth of shops selling something for everyone.

As always, past and present come together and all of these activities take place under the watchfull gaze of the remains of Roman and Moorish vestiges.

Maro, a town close to Nerja, with its Moorish flavour, and more than 800 inhabitants, most of them fishermen and country folk, has played a star role in the history of Nerja. This is recorded in its monuments and ancient historical treasures. It boasts impressive cliffs and small coves that have been the inspiration of numerous artists who have set up residence here.
